Big Cyber v Small Business Pt 3: The Fear Factor
So, you just heard about yet another cyber attack and the sensationalized reports strikes fear in your heart. You’re left wondering
“What if the attack impacts my business?”
“Are my customers or suppliers impacted?”
“How can I prevent these kinds of attacks ruining my company?”
“How do I even find out?”
And of course, the reports made for mass consumption are full of quotes from Big Cyber, who are only too pleased to tell you how their outrageously priced solutions are the only answer. So you’re left with your questions and the “Fear Factor”.
Big Cyber does far too little to address the needs of small business, the engine of America’s economy. Most business owners are focused on their industry, work force, and customers. They rely on staff support in areas like Human Resources, Finances, and IT. Talented cybersecurity personnel are hard to come by and expensive when you find them.
Many business owners rely solely on a few products and services from Big Cyber that promise to deliver adequate cybersecurity. Actually making efficient use of these products and services, however, can be present an entirely different set of problems. Perhaps you assign one staff member who demonstrates some skills with cybersecurity to manage it for you. That’s the choice many small business owners have to make but it never gives them the confidence that it’s all working fine and your business is protected.
